Design Assistant

Assist in the production of book jackets and interiors. Responsibilities include: scanning, creating mechanicals, sizing art, doing castoffs and art analyses, and other typical design assistant duties, some original design based on candidate’s abilities.

Knowledge of InDesign is required and all Adobe applications a plus.

Editorial Intern for Acquisitions Editorial Department: Spring 2012 (January through mid-May)

We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in publishing to intern during the spring semester. The internship is under the guidance of the assistant to the Senior Executive Editor for the Social Sciences (a subject including social work, psychology, criminology, and gerontology). Responsibilities of editorial interns include:

  • Coordinate peer reviews of manuscripts and book proposals
  • Contact scholars qualified to review the material, photocopy and send the material to readers, maintain a spreadsheet of all manuscripts/proposals being reviewed, request reviewer honoraria
  • Draft and send publishing agreements
  • Attend editorial and marketing meetings
  • Prepare distribution lists with addresses of the people who should receive a complimentary copy of the book
  • Ensure final manuscripts submitted to the Press meet house style
  • Write memos that accompany final manuscripts that are released into production. These memos include a general description of the book, and among other things, comment on the potential audience for the book, the academic conferences where the book should be displayed, and the courses into which the book can be adopted
  • Solicit comments for promotional copy
The intern should be able to commit to two or three full days (seven hours) a week, each week from mid-January to mid-May. This internship is an unpaid position but the Press offers reimbursement for daily travel to and from the internship.
