"Courtesans and Opium is an unsung gem of nineteenth-century Chinese fiction. Patrick Hanan's translation is simply stunning. An enduring piece of literature." — Keith McMahon, University of Kansas

"This novel serves as a remarkably clear window into an age long gone and a place irrevocably changed. It richly deserves to be widely studied, and Patrick Hanan thankfully 'discovers' it for the academic world." — Robert E. Hegel, Washington University, St. Louis
